Visceral Fat (Active Fat)

Medical Conditions

Fat can be divided into visceral, subcutaneous and inter-muscle fat. A growing belly can be the result of both visceral and subcutaneous fat which is the fat we feel under our skin.

Visceral fat is body fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity and is stored around our internal organs ie the liver, pancreas and intestines. It is sometimes referred as ‘active fat’ as research has shown that this type of fat plays a distinctive and potentially dangerous role affecting our hormonal function.

It secretes a protein called RBP4 which increases insulin resistance, leading to GLUCOSE INTOLERANCE and TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS. Besides this, it is also associated with increased risk of HYPERTENSION, HEART DISEASE, BREAST CANCER, COLORECTAL CANCER and ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE.

The most certain way to measure visceral fat is MRI scan but this is very costly. A relatively good indicator is waistline measurement which however, has the inconvenience of measuring the body and inaccuracy marked by discrepancy in measurements taken by different measurers.

A body composition analyzer uses its impedance index to provide scientific estimation of visceral fat, total body fat and waist hip ratio accurately and hence an effective and affordable tool to diagnose and manage obesity. With its high degree of reproduction and accuracy, regular monitoring of these levels becomes convenient and helps in the treatment of obesity.
